Introduction

This is just one of my favorite songs by the Pogues, its an old Irish folk song, that is rather sad.

The Personal Travel Narrative is a story about my first trip to the beautiful islands of Hawaii. It is a beautiful place and the people are truely amazing, as can be seen in the narrative. I believe my trip there helped to calm me down and taught me to see life as it truely is, beautiful. I chose the Hawaiian wedding song for this story just because its a very pretty song. I also really remember  the song and dance they did to it at the luau.

The Merchant Narrative is the story of Nanaivandak, a merchant traveling around the year 751. The goal of this assignment was to take Susan Whitfield’s rather dull, information loaded “stories” and make them interesting. I was hard pressed to find I song I liked for this story. I chose meditation because it just seemed fitting for Nanaivandak. I painted him in a harsh light but I think he “was” a mellow person who saw beauty in everything,

The Diary of Margaret McGinn, is written about my really great aunt coming to live in America, after my really great grandfather  came over with his wife and son. According to records both families stayed here Maggie settled in Indiana and John went further west, their grandchildren returned to Ireland.  It just about a young Irish woman being forced from her home. I chose “Sailing to Chicago” for this one because I really liked the song, a very typical Irish tune. Sailing to Chicago, those are my people, so the title really did it for me to.  :)

The Vistors Travel Narrative was a way for us to show off our home towns. Mine showcased the sleepy town of Edison Park. I chose Sweet Home Chicago for this piece, because well its Chicago and its my home.

So what can be learned from all these different experiences? Each one brings a into view a new view of a different culture. We see insights into our culture that we might have missed as well as things that are fairly obvious. We see inequality and cultures clashing, and what happens because of that. We find people who are able to live in a diverse community and those who are not.  Essentially, this work continues to back up one of my favorite sayings. “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle” Plato.
